Celebrating 25 Years at City Cafe

On Thursday, May 27th, everyone gathered at City Cafe to celebrate their 25th Anniversary with owner, Karim Alaoui. He graciously hosted the event and made Children’s Cancer Fund the beneficiary of the ticket sales, silent auction and raffle. Good times were had by all as usual at City Cafe. Thanks to everyone who attended and enjoyed the evening with us!

The event expenses for Children’s Cancer Fund were underwritten by Janet Stone, 2009 President and current CCF board member. Lindy Berkley, CCF President-Elect for 2011, spoke about our organization at the event and introduced Amber Craven, the artist for the event invitation. Amber pulled the winning lucky raffle ticket, and she presented Karim with her framed artwork.

Amber, 9, lives in Murphy with her mother Robin, father Darrell, sister Ashley, and brother Austin.  She loves spending time with her pets. She has a dog Chloe, two cats Princess and Smokey, and a rabbit named Frisky.  Amber wants to be an artist or a singer when she grows up.  Her heroes are men and women in the armed forces who fight for our freedom like her cousin Sandi and her husband Rick.  Her favorite 3rd grade subjects at Martha Hunt Elementary are math and art.  Amber’s favorite singer is Rihanna, and her favorite song is “Umbrella”.  On the weekends, she enjoys playing with her best friend Skylar and cooking breakfast with her family.  She would like to go to Hollywood to meet movie stars some day. Amber enjoys singing, dancing, drawing, baking cookies, and making scrapbooks.

Amber was diagnosed with Severe Chronic Neutropenia, a pre-leukemic condition that converts to Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Margolis Sisters donate their birthdays to Children’s Cancer Fund!

Kaila Margolis (pictured below, center) donated her birthday in service to Children’s Cancer Fund. She had a slumber party with her friends, and they decorated picture frames for 21 of the children currently battling cancer that participated in our luncheon and fashion show!

Kea Margolis (pictured below) asked her friends to bring donations to Children’s Cancer Fund instead of birthday presents to her party.

Children’s Cancer Fund is very thankful to Kaila and Kea for selflessly giving their birthdays to help raise money for CCF and brighten the day of kids currently fighting cancer.

$260,000 Raised at the Luncheon Event!

Children currently battling cancer had an “out of this world” fantastic time on Friday, April 23rd at the Children’s Cancer Fund’s 22nd Annual “Beyond the Rainbow” Luncheon and Fashion Show! The theme of “Bright Stars. Bright Hope.” was carried throughout the Chantilly Ballroom at the Hilton Anatole Hotel to make it seem like you were in outer space. The scene included neon lights, glow-in-the-dark bracelets for napkin rings, and orange Tang was served. They even had a giant air-inflated astronaut to greet guests and children at the door, and a real astronaut served as a celebrity on the runway.

After the silent auction, the 2010 Luncheon Co-Chairs Marisa Huckin and Adelina Kainer took the stage to welcome everyone to the show along with our honorary Co-Chairs Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach. The children walked the runway while showing off their new clothes from Dillard’s. Each child was escorted by a sponsor or celebrity. It was a day for the kids to shine and hopefully to forget about their cancer for a while and just have fun!

There were 1,000 attendees at the event including our generous sponsors, family members, board, and committee that worked so hard to make this day possible. The funds raised are donated to Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas for pediatric cancer research and treatment programs. The show concluded with almost 100 children on stage – both cancer survivors and children currently battling cancer – while actress Janine Turner and her daughter Juliette sang for the crowd.

We are pleased to report that the event raised $260,000!

International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day

Organizations around the world will join forces today to raise awareness for childhood cancer. The aim of the day is to help children with cancer get the best possible treatment and care, no matter where they live in the world, by raising both awareness and money.

The treatment and care of pediatric cancer patients requires a whole interdisciplinary team, to provide not just the medical treatment of the child (which may include surgery and radiation), but also the psychosocial support for the child and the whole family. Close cooperation between the medical team at the hospital and the parents of the child is considered to be an essential component of the successful treatment and care of the child.

Every advancement in curing childhood cancer has come through research. Please consider making a donation today by clicking the “Donate Now” button on our web site or sponsoring one of our events. Together we all can make a difference!

CCF donates $50,000 to Children’s Medical Center

Children’s Cancer Fund donated $50,000 to Children’s Medical Center to support the Child Life Assistant position in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. CCF has funded this valued member of the CCBD team since 2002.

With the primary goal of minimizing the impact of illness on normal growth and development, Child Life professionals help children and families understand and process their healthcare experiences. The position provides psychosocial, emotional, and educational support, as well as positive distractions, to children and families in the clinic setting. The Child Life Assistant helps to relieve patient and family anxiety associated with medical procedures, and offers fun, developmentally appropriate activities which encourage play, promote healthy child development, and offer a break from the stresses of the hospital environment.

With the help of Children’s Cancer Fund, Children’s Medical Center is committed to making valuable support services like Child Life available to patients and families at no charge.

GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES $38,900 FOR CCF

In honor of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, SBB Management Company hosted their first annual golf tournament with 92 players at Lantana Golf Club on September 14, 2009. The idea for the event began with SBB’s CEO Fred Shapiro, but the hard work and planning with his staff made their event a reality. As an Advisory Board Member of Children’s Cancer Fund, Shapiro chose CCF as the beneficiary of this grand event and raised $38,900!

Mr. Shapiro and his wife, Dr. Karen Bradshaw hosted the sponsors of the tournament at their home the night prior.  It was a great evening for everyone to network and socialize before the event.

The golf tournament was an opportunity for community association members to give back. The sponsors included vendors, contractors and professionals. Several homeowners’ association members played in the tournament as well. It was a remarkable day for a worthy cause! After the final hole, an awards dinner at Lantana Golf Club recognized those who placed. The master of ceremonies, Drew Pearson, signed footballs and photographs in exchange for donations to Children’s Cancer Fund. After a video about CCF, the former Dallas Cowboy great shared his experiences and involvement with our luncheon and fashion show.

Mr. Shapiro’s daughter, Melinda, participates in CCF’s annual “Beyond the Rainbow” Luncheon and Fashion Show. The luncheon is CCF’s largest fundraiser, and the 22nd Annual will be held on Friday, April 23, 2010 at The Hilton Anatole Dallas. The theme this year is “Bright Stars. Bright Hope.” Children currently undergoing cancer treatment and the survivors are models on the runway escorted by celebrities and our sponsors.
